Free university can open doors for bright people from low-income families who cannot afford to pay. It may also help society when more people gain skills. On the other hand, taxes must rise to fund free places, and not every course clearly leads to a public benefit. I partly agree with free access for the poorest students, but I think some contribution through fees is fair for those who can afford to pay and who choose career courses with high private returns.
