Caring for Older People
Writing Task 2
Question
In many countries the population is ageing. Some believe families should be mainly responsible for caring for elderly relatives, while others think the government should provide more residential care and healthcare services. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
Model Answer
Many older people want to live with family because they feel loved and safe at home. But adult children are busy with jobs and may lack medical skills. State homes and nurses can give professional care, but they are expensive for taxpayers. In my opinion, a mix works best: support families with home visits and subsidies.
