Tourism at Historical Sites
Writing Task 2
Question
International tourism brings income to important historical and cultural sites, but large visitor numbers can also damage them. To what extent do the advantages of tourism in such places outweigh the disadvantages?
Model Answer
Tourist spending can pay for restorations and create jobs for local residents near ancient monuments. Crowds, however, can erode footpaths, raise noise, and in some cases harm fragile art or carvings. I believe the benefits are greater when the site has a management plan, including visitor limits and high entrance fees in peak season, so that the disadvantages can be kept under control.
